An adults-only lap pool that few residents have folded into a routine yet. A 28,000-square-foot garden that is quietly rewriting the Manta menu. And a June evening that will matter to anyone who owns here, whether they attend or not.
The Dining Map Has Been Redrawn
Manta remains the signature room, and the coastal views above Kauna'oa Bay have not moved. What has changed is the sourcing philosophy. The restaurant introduced a new hyper garden-to-table menu centered on local and seasonal ingredients sourced from Hawai'i Island farmers, fishermen, ranchers and the resort's new 28,000-square-foot on-site Ulu Garden. The refreshed menu emphasizes locally sourced ingredients, including Kona kampachi, Hilo-grown hearts of palm, and local lobster, prawns, and fish. If you last dined at Manta before the closure, expect the room to feel familiar and the plate to feel newer than the room does.
Live jazz has also settled into a rhythm worth planning around. Dinner runs 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM with a last seating at 8:30 PM, and live jazz plays 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. Those three nights are the ones to book if the evening is the point; the other four are for people who want the view without the accompaniment.
The bigger shift is at the beach. Hau Tree used to be a daytime hut you visited barefoot and left before dark. Post-renovation, it flips. Located just steps from Kaunaoa Bay, Hau Tree has been reimagined as Hau Tree Cantina by evening, serving contemporary regional Mexican dishes inspired by Sinaloa, Sonora, Campeche, Oaxaca, and Yucatan. Think Baja-style fish tacos, modern takes on Mexican classics, and a tequila and mezcal list that's worth the trip alone. The setting is open-air, beachfront, casual — the kind of spot where you lose track of time over drinks and small plates. Legacy favorites like the Frederico and Ovaltine Froth remain on the menu, a nod to guests who've been returning for decades.
The resident-level takeaway: for a jazz-scored, occasion dinner, Manta on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday. For a spontaneous sand-adjacent night with mezcal, Hau Tree Cantina. Copper Bar, which has completed its enhancements and is open for dining, with updated hours and menus posted by the resort, fills the middle: a drink after golf that does not require a reservation.
Two New Pools, And They Are Not Interchangeable
The pool question used to be simple, because there was one pool. Now there are two, and they serve different moods.
The original resort pool has reopened as a family pool for families and guests alike, and a new adults-only infinity edge lap pool sits adjacent to the recently added fitness center. Both hotel pools showcase sweeping oceanfront vistas of Kauna'oa Bay. A new oceanfront wellness retreat includes a 2,500-square-foot fitness center and an adults-only infinity lap pool with a lanai.
For residents who already have a lanai and a pool at home, the interesting one is the lap pool. It solves a specific problem: a real morning workout in salt-adjacent air, followed by a shower and a walk to breakfast, without the choreography of getting into a car. The family pool, by contrast, is where the resort's original 1965 geometry has been preserved. Several defining elements remain, including the lobby's original deep blue hue from its 1965 design, and the historic pool overlooking Kauna'oa Bay.
The Ulu Garden Is The Story Under The Story
The Ulu Garden is easy to file under "amenity" and forget. That would be a mistake. The gardens include traditional Hawaiian plants like taro and breadfruit in the Ulu Garden, which debuted in 2025. At 28,000 square feet, it now supplies Manta directly, which means the reason a Manta plate tastes different from what a visiting friend remembers is not a chef's pen. It is a supply chain that starts a few hundred yards away.
For anyone hosting mainland guests this summer, this is the fact that makes the meal land: the hearts of palm, the herbs, and a share of the produce were pulled that morning from a garden between the two hotels. Walk the perimeter path before dinner and the plate reads differently.
June 5 And Why It Matters Even If You Skip It
The 60th anniversary gala is the resort's headline moment of the year. The renovation coincides with a reopening gala in June 2026. To mark the anniversary, the resort is offering a limited Grand Reopening Package requiring a four-night stay that includes June 5, 2026. The package includes daily breakfast for two at Manta and two tickets to the gala.
For owners at Mauna Kea Residences, the gala itself is the smaller half of the story. The larger half is what a $180 million-plus, gala-anchored reopening does to the corridor's visibility. The overhaul spans the 1,800-acre oceanfront property, now part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, and includes updates to guest rooms and suites, new pools and wellness facilities, revitalized dining, and a reimagined golf course. On average, the hotel hosts approximately 25,000 visitors each year. A 60th-anniversary reopening cycle tends to concentrate that traffic into the summer months. Foot traffic in the shops, wait times at Hau Tree Cantina, tee sheets at the redesigned Robert Trent Jones Jr. course — all of it will run hotter than a typical June and July.
The Spa Is The One Thing Still To Come
The last unopened piece is worth planning around rather than showing up for. The Spa at Mauna Kea, opening in spring 2026, features 11 treatment rooms, both al fresco as well as indoor and outdoor couples treatment suites, separate male and female purification gardens, steam and sauna facilities, a movement pavilion, and a spa vitality pool. Designed to be organically connected to the land and rooted in Hawaiian healing traditions, the spa experience begins with an oli chant and extends beyond individual treatments to include plunge and soaking pools and a wellness deck intended for reflection and restoration.
Two source dates disagree slightly on the opening: the resort's own renewal page slates the spa for April 2026, while later reporting describes it as "coming this spring". Either way, if you booked a treatment for a June guest and it has not materialized on the reservation system, the pause is expected rather than a problem.
A Practical Note For The Fourth Of July
This one is short and worth putting on the calendar. Hapuna Beach, immediately south of the resort and the natural overflow beach for residents whose friends want a wider stretch of sand than Kauna'oa, has a hard stop this year. Per Hawaii's Division of State Parks, there will be an early closure at 5 p.m. HST on Saturday, July 4, 2026 for the West Hawaii State Parks, including Hapuna, due to a fireworks-prohibited-in-state-parks enforcement. The golf redesign is the second piece of infrastructure, after the spa, that will settle into its final rhythm over the next few seasons.
